- After various changing of hands in the late Middle Ages, Rietberg became property of Anton von Travers in 1530. Anton's children sold the castle and lordship to Hercules von Salis, a Grison Captain in the Valtellina, in 1554. The property was divided in 1617 between Salis and Pompeius von Planta, the son of the brother of Herkules von Salis. Four years later, during the troubles which so shook the Grisons, Pompeius von Planta was killed by Georg Jenatsch, the Protestant pastor of Scharans, and his accomplices.
The Rietberg estate continued to be held by the patrician families Buol and Planta until 1758, when the Buol family acquired the property held by the Planta family and restored the unity of the original property. Today, Rietberg castle is privately owned.
After flee ing the "Holy Massacre" of Protestants in the Valtellina in 1620, Georg Jenatsch helped assassinate the powerful Pompeius von Planta, in 162 at his castle Rietberg, where he was left pinned to the floor with an axe, though the actual murderer was most likely Niklaus Carl von Hohenbalcken. After the murder of Pomeius, and several other violent incidents, Jenatsch lost his position as a pastor, and henceforth acted solely as a soldier and military entrepreneur. Georg killed his commanding officer in a duel in 1629, and his own life ended in a tavern in 1639 when he was murdered -- with an axe -- by a man dressed as a bear, as it was Carnival. Although the murderers remained anonymous and were never captured or tried, the most likely culprit was Rudolf von Planta, son of the murdered Pompeius, or men in his employ.
