Niels Gagge was born circa 1380-90, son of and unknown minor nobleman and Strange Gagge's daughter (she passed on the family's name to her son). Niels Gagge's wife Ingeborg was born around the same time as her husband, she is the daughter of Claus Knudsen (Taa). Niels and Ingeborg were married sometime before 1413.
Niels Gagge was a "v?bner" (esquire), and lived at the "hovedg?rden" (manor house) of F?reb?k in Oxie district. His seal displays a vertically divided shield with a "skr?bj?lke" (diagonal brace) - not the "sparre" (chevron) of his descendants - in one field, and a half flower (in place of a wheel, but the seal is certainly well worn, so it may well be a wheel!).
Since his mother's Gagge-family used a "dyrehoved" (animal's head: either a bear or a wulf) in their shield, is it therefore not a fusion of Niels Gagge's paternal and maternal family arms, which one otherwise would be probable when he inherited the Gagge family-name. Therefore it could be his unknown father who had created the coat of arms, but he is not yet found. Niels Gagge was referred to as "nev?" (nephew) in "kannik" (canon) Anders Strangesen's "testamente" (will), and it is because of this that we know of the connection inspite of the fact that they are unknown and unrecorded persons!
Coat of arms (V?ben): an oblique Bar in the first field, and a half Flower [or half Mill-Wheel] in the second field (Skr?bj?lke og Halv Blomst). In heraldry, a bend is a colored band that runs from the upper right (from the point of view of a person bearing the shield) corner of the shield to the lower left. Considering that the alternative spelling of Gagge was "Kagge" it seems more probable that the half Flower (Blomst) is actually a half Mill-Wheel (Kaggehjul)!
