- Lindenov's accounts from Hammershus 1598/99 (Bornholm County archives, the National Archives) informs us that "Claus Kamb" of R?nne bought several barrels of oil [probably for export] from the "Lensmand" (Vassal).
The following is a translation from the article "De bornholmske v?bnersl?gter Uf og Splid - noget nyt om deres v?bener", written by Sigvard Mahler Dam, published in Heraldisk Tidsskrift.
An Old Church-bell: Peder Hansen (Uf)'s coat of arms seem to have brought some confusion for researchers, because it appears that J?rgen Gagge and his wife Margrethe put up yet another memorial to honour Peder Hansen (Uf) and Mette Hansdatter. In 1601 they had cast a new large church-bell (which later disappeared) for Klemensker Church. [Laurids de] Thurah quotes the following (12): "Paa den st?rste Klokke findes tvende Vaabener, det ene med et Spende udi, som ventelig er de Adelige Koefoders; Det andet med en Giedde Kieft udi." (On the large bell you find two arms, one carries the chevron, the emblem of the noble Koefod-family, the other carries the pike's jaw.)
The engraving on the bell read:
"Anno 1601. Lod Claus Kames denne Klokke st?be til St. Clemmens Kirke paa Bornholm, efter Velbyrdige Hr. J?rgen Gages og Hr. Lars Nielsens i den Tiid Sogne-Herres Befaling, af Rheinholt Benning i L?beck".
(In the Year of Our Lord 1601. Claus Kames requested this bell be cast for St. Clemen's Church of Bornholm after the request of the Well-Born Mr. J?rgen Gage and Mr. Lars Nielsen in the time Parish Lord's commandment, of Rheinholt Benning in L?beck.)
The wife of this Claus Kames is not known - she could be the Margrethe who was commemorated on the pulpit in R?nne, and who died in R?nne on May 10, 1593. However, it seems more likely that she was his elderly mother. Possibly Claus Kames might have had both a mother and a wife named Margrethe, and this fact has confused things in the the pedigrees.
Alderman (R?dmand) Claus Kames must have died between 1601 and 1608, when the next "Hyldingsfuldmagt" was issued; he ought to be mentioned then, as the position of alderman and mayor were usually for life.
Claus Kames is probably the father of "Kirkev?rge" (Churchwarden) Albert Kames [spelling?] (-1623-) of R?nne; the grandfather of "Raadmand" (Alderman) "Claus Kamb" [senior] (-1648-); and great-grandfather of "Raadmand" (Alderman) Claus Kamb/Kames [junior] (-1648-, died c.1676) and Jacob Kam[b] (-1678-) of (Balka?) Bodilsker parish.
