Store Munkeg?rd is located in the south-eastern part of ?ker parish, in a region known as Strandby; which is a region along ?ker parish's beach-front, it was densely populated - hense the name: strand=beach, by=town.
The church for ?kirkeby township and ?ker parish is located just outside of the township of ?kirkeby proper, so paradoxically enough the town that draws its name from the "River Church" (Aae Kirke) does not actually have a church within its municipal boundries at all. ?kirkeby was the traditional seat of Bornholm's judiciary authority, its "Landsting" (Parliament), and the Aae Kirke was used as their meeting place.
