J?rgen Hansen's wife also had her Testimonium written by A. Kilchow. Since it gives us a good understanding of her life and is of value to her descendants here follows Karen S?rensdatter's eulogy:
The dear God-fearing widow Karen S?rensdatter, whose earthly remains we just tearfully carried to their resting-place in yonder grave outside the church, was born in Baaring on April 24, 1774. She was the daughter of farm-owner S?ren Madsen and his wife Maren Nielsdatter, and she had four brothers and two sisters; of which two brothers and one sister still survive. Her parents, long since called home to Eternity, were industrious people who brought up all their children to obey the words of the Lord, and God bestowed upon them many blessings. The deceased, our dear widow, was early on properly educated, both in church and school, on the truth of Jesus' Crucifixion. She was confirmed in her faith, and that serious commitment came not only from her lips, but also from her heart - and she never waivered there from, however chaotic the world became around her.
As a young woman she married farmer Anders J?rgensen of Baaring, and became a happy wife and mother; but their bliss was not to last: after only 12 years of marriage death came and tore away her husband. She was left to mourn with her fatherless son - though her faith in God helped her through her sorrow and tribulations. In 1814 she married for the second time, and became the wife of J?rgen Hansen of Brenderup, a devoutly Christian man of a serious, scholarly nature, and once again she became a happy wife and mother of two hope-filled children.
This marriage, based on Faith in God, respect and good-will, lasted for 27 years - and then Death once again cruelly struck, and for the second time she had to follow a beloved husband to his grave, grief-struck and sorrow-bent. She had grown old and tired of days, frail of body, but strong in spirit, and longed to join her dearly departed loved-ones; she therefore prayed fervently to be released, and God answered her prayers, so that Karen S?rensdatter, on Sunday, February 8, at 2 p.m. exchanged the present-existence for Eternity, dying a peaceful and serene death nearly 72 years old.
As to the character of the departed, everybody agreed upon her brave, steadfast, God-fearing, and loving qualities. She was a faithful companion to her husband and loved him with total devotion. She treated her servants with love and respect, and was a loving mother, rearing her children to honour God. She was kind and hospitable to strangers - a faithful friend - and never passed harsh judgements. As well, she was a true friend to the poor, and could have asked the same question as Job: "Have I eaten my bread alone? Did I share it with the widow and her fatherless children?" Though to voice such a question was not in the character of this religious and humble woman, whose left hand didn't know what her right hand was doing.
Regarding her relationship with God these last years, you could not imagine anything more beautiful or childlike: she would pray to God before sleep came and closed her tired eyes - and again upon awakening God was first in her thoughts. What the Writer of Psalms sang so poignantly: "To bid goodbye to the world without qualms - be it in the middle of Life or toward the end of a long Life - is equally hard to learn" - was for Karen an easy matter, because like Paul, she was able to say: "I did not pretend to act among you without Jesus Christ, who was crucified for our redemption." Yes, thus you were known among us - oh, dearest departed widow! Blessed be your memory! - Eulogy by A. Kilschow.
Following are two short ancedotes, one about J?rgen Hansen and one about Karen S?rensdatter, which serve to illistrate him as the well-educated, confident farmer, and her as a skillful housewife:
J?rgen Hansen's farmworkers complained to him of long delays for their horse-and-wagon when they endevoured to deliver the required "harvest tenth" and nobody showed up to receive it. J?rgen Hansen, who knew that it was illegal to keep the wagon waiting without extraordinary circumstance, told his men to proceed in the following manner: if the next time nobody came to greet them, after a reasonable waiting period to just dump the tenth into the dung-heap in the farm-yard! Exactly this happened with the next delivery - a second lesson was not required, for after that there were no more delays! No compensation was claimed for the spoiled tenth from J?rgen Hansen, they all knew that he had the law on his side.
Karen's ancedote goes like this: In 1837 old Pastor Thorup in Asperup took very ill - he was said to be at Death's door. His appetite was failing, and he only felt up to eating a very few things; and the very best he could think of having was a pancake so delicious as only Karen, J?rgen Hansen's wife in Baaring, could make. The message was conveyed to her, and of course this she lovingly did. When the ailing clergyman tasted her pancake he exclaimed, "It is Manna from Heaven." And certainly no greater praise could be given.
A poem was written in memory of J?rgen Hansen by Cand. Magister Ulrik Frederik Sch?tt, a preacher in Vissenbjerg, and it is included in a book of poems he had published in Odense in 1842:
J?rgen Hansen, bailiff and farm-owner in Baaring, December 7, 1841
Down over the thatched roofs of the village
echoes the chime of the funeral bell.
The laments from wife, son and daughter
follow the Funeral-procession.
Faithful Father and devoted Mate,
Loving Brother and Friend,
Many sighs and tears of grief,
Accompanying you to your grave.
Not as a Knight, sword at your side,
did you stand amongst your brethern.
Your words did not take flight
under vaulted Arches.
Rather you wandered piously the path at home,
Fighting for all that is noble and pure,
Friendly in your toil on the Land,
Faithful to your God and King.
Truth has drawn this Testimony on your freshly-dug grave:
The Glimmer and Splendour have
sunk into the Dust, and into the Sea of Time,
Beauty and Rank faded and lost,
Disappearing forever into the Earth;
Though all that your Love so gently sheltered,
Will last to the End of Time.
