- Before she was married, Kirstine N?rrelund taught gymnastics in a school in K?benhavn. Her son Thomas relates that she lost a leg to cancer circa 1913, she later lost the other leg (both amputated above the knees) as well. She was in and out of various sanitoriums for many years; and was bed ridden for the last ten years of her life. Outside of her bedroom window was a rounded mirror that allowed her to view the entire street in front of her house.
Her grandson Bent N?rrelund Madsen tells he was sure to visit her most every day, as she was lonely and sure to have cookies in the house! She often read the stories of Hans Christian Andersen to her grandchildren, acting out the various parts as she read aloud.

Dear Herdis,
We thank you for your photo, we are glad that you haven't forgotten us and we hope that when you have the opportunity you will come in person to visit us. It is a good photo, but the living Herdis is much better. We are now old and can't do very much and therefore can understand that there is nothing real nice for young people to come and visit us, these old people. But for our sake we think that you will come and you must also believe that down at the Pastor's farm they would be very happy to see you again. You must not believe dear Herdis that we have forgotten you or look down upon you and that we are not like you. We have so much to thank you for.

Dear Herdis and Asker!
Now I have been on Sams? together with Thomas and I like the school - the island and all of it. The S?rensens from Kolding have been here for 3 or 4 days with all three of their children and a maid, and that eased my mind a bit. Will we soon see you? Remember Thomas' birthday this September 3rd. The address is Sams? Boarding School, Sams?.

Dear Herdis!
Happy birthday, you will have to make do with these few words, because I am in bed with a fever. As soon as I feel better I will write you, I didn't write Sigrid yesterday because I was feeling so poorly.
Loving regards to you and all the children as well as Dagmar,
Sophus and Kirstine Madsen
