- From Niels Hansen's (born 1847) memoir:
My step-father, Klaus Pedersen of Dyreh?jg?rd, died on March 14, 1895 and here is an excerpt from the newspaper article I wrote for the Middelfart Newspaper:
Last Thursday the well-known farmer Klaus Pedersen of Baaring passed away. He was born in Fyllested, where his father leased a farm from an estate land-owner. As this "slave-master relationship" with the estate land-owners was a demeaning and impoverishing way of life for small farmers, like Klaus Pedersen's father, he would come to fight for his rights. He was an able farmer, who used innovative methods and even fashioned most of his own farming equipment. Unfortunately he died early in life, and Klaus Pedersen, being the oldest son, had to step into his father's role at the age of eighteen years - and take care of his numerous siblings. From those still living their testimony is one of praise, for the way he took care of them all and the farming as well.
Ever since childhood Klaus had enjoyed visiting his father's brother in Baaring, and at the age of 25 years his uncle got him a job as farm-manager for Mads Hansen in Baaring. This was a turning point in his life - now he was free of the estate land-owners and could enjoy the fruits of his own labour. He cleverly constructed a new type of "free-swinging plough", the first ever successfully used in Asperup county. He kept on managing the farm until the death of Mads Hansen, and then married his widow in 1842. After she passed away he married another widow, Ane Margrethe Andersen of Baaring, in 1860 (my mother) and was for 34 years a loving husband and father for us five children. A difficult task he succeeded so well in doing.
He was a deeply religious man, a close friend of the late Pastor Melbye as well as the following Pastors in Asperup. He was a staunch patriot and supported the drive for freedom for S?nderjylland. In politics he joined men like Tcherning and Balthazar Christensen in the moderate liberal party and participated in every election for Parliament.
At home in "Dyrh?j" he showed his practical knowledge in farming: he built the place from the ground up and planted tree-seedlings that later developed into a lush shelter-belt under he expert care.
During the years Klaus Pedersen held many public offices, among these being Reeve for our parish from 1848-50. He was co-founder of the Savings Bank for Asperup and N?rre Aaby.
With his passing many have lost a faithful friend and co-worker, and his family deeply mourn the loss of their loving husband and father.
